The department was established as Major department at the Under Graduate level in the year 1986. Since then it has produced University Gold medalists and Rank holders every year under the Bharathiar University.

Having acquired Academic autonomy 15 years back, the department has revamped and restructured the Curriculum aspects from time to time and innovative courses and research oriented courses have been introduced. Under Innovative programme,  courses like Programming in C for Physics problems, MATLAB for Physics applications, Digital Photography for Self-employable skills, Instrumentation as Skill based course to learn the technical aspects of instruments and to expand the placement opportunities in these areas have been introduced in the Curriculum. To cater to the Research thirst, Nanotechnolgy I & II, Laser Physics and Fiber Optics and Digital electronics and Microprocessor have been introduced in the curriculum and experiments in these areas are also being performed during the laboratory sessions.

To support the skill based course in Instrumentation, the students are made to undergo a training programme for one week time at the NABL accredited institution SI’TARC, cbe, a Government of India undertaking institution which offers employment also on completion of the course.

The department has conducted many fruitful programmes such as National level Seminars , Workshops, Quality enhancement programmes for college teachers, science exhibition for school children from these rural areas and other science activities to create societal awareness and awareness on health and hygiene and also on the importance of Science Education.
The department is a registered center for conducting the National level Graduate Physics Examination for UG students hosted by IAPT, Head office Kanpur. Students participating in this examination will have wider opportunity for the research at the PG level. 

The department takes great pride in declaring that the Alumini from this department are working as Research Scholars in various fields in the Foreign Universities and some of them are well placed in leading corporate sectors.
